Our story

A century of steady continuity.

A 1909 founding in Topeka, Kansas. A 1912 merger that gave the company its present name. A mutual structure that hasn’t changed since. Below, the long version of how American Home Life got here.

Same city, same state, every year since

American Home Life Insurance Company was founded in 1909 in Topeka, Kansas under the name Kansas Home Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1912, the Company merged with American Mutual Life Insurance Company of McPherson, Kansas and adopted its current name, a name it has operated under for over a hundred years since.

Throughout the last century, AHL’s mutual corporate structure, conservative investment philosophy, and Midwestern, value-oriented culture have allowed the company to grow and prosper through multiple World Wars, epidemics, and recessions, fulfilling its commitments to policyholders, agents, and employees through every one of them.

What carried the company through

Three things, repeated for a hundred years.

The history isn’t dramatic, and that’s the point. The same three commitments, applied through every decade.

01

Mutual structure

Owned by policyholders, not investors. No shareholders to answer to. No quarterly earnings to chase. Decisions weighed against decades, not earnings calls.

02

Conservative investment philosophy

A long-term, customized strategy that prioritizes ongoing financial solvency above all else, designed to fulfill obligations to policyholders regardless of the financial climate of the day.

03

Midwestern values

Honesty, integrity, courtesy, stewardship, deeply rooted in the corporate culture of a 100+ year-old Kansas company. On the surface and in the fine print.

Where this leads

The company today.

The structure, the investment discipline, and the values described above aren’t artifacts of a hundred years ago, they’re how AHL operates right now. The About page lays out what that looks like in practice.
