Our story

Founded in 1909. Built to outlast generations.

For more than a century, American Home Life has answered to one group of people, its policyholders. Same Topeka address. Same mutual structure. Same Midwestern way of doing business.

Owned by policyholders

A mutual, not a stock company.

AHL was founded, and operates today, as a mutual insurance company. A mutual is, simply, a company owned exclusively by its policyholders. There are no shareholders. The company isn’t publicly traded on any exchange.

That distinction matters, because it means we can act in our policyholders’ long-term interest without weighing the effect of every decision on a shareholder’s short-term one. As a result, AHL is well-positioned to navigate unexpected financial or political events, and ultimately better able to fulfill its obligations to policyholders both on time and in full, when we’re needed most.

The portfolio

A long-term view of the long term.

A long-term, conservative investment management philosophy has always been the foundation of AHL’s financial strength and stability. Our asset management team deploys capital under a highly customized, conservative strategy that prioritizes ongoing, long-term financial solvency above all else.

AHL’s portfolio is currently, and will remain, well positioned to continue fulfilling our obligations to policyholders now and into the future, regardless of the financial climate of the day.

How we work

Midwestern values, on the surface, and in the fine print.

As a 100+ year-old Kansas company, Midwestern values are deeply rooted in the corporate culture of AHL. Honesty, integrity, and courtesy, the qualities our policyholders expect and deserve when they trust us with their life insurance needs.

We strive to demonstrate those values every day, at every level of the business. From the cordial conversation you’ll encounter when you call in, to the ease of buying our simple, transparent products, we believe these values are immediately apparent on the surface, and just as much in the fine print.
